The National Academy of Sciences is an organization of scientists and engineers which was established on 3 March 1863 by act of Congress. It was set up to give advice to the government on all scientific and technological matters.
In 1916 the Academy established the National Research Council which were designed to coordinate the activities of scientists and engineers in a wide variety of different situations such as universities, industry, and government.
