^ Subject: Collecting GAP programs

Dear Forum members,

In the discussion in the GAP-forum over the last days several
colleagues have offered programs written in GAP that either complement
or improve functions available in the library of GAP functions of
release 3.3. This is a most welcome development that GAP, as an open
system, has been meant to trigger from the beginning. However such
offers made just once in the GAP forum will reach only some of those
who might be interested. Therefore we are offering a further
possibility.

On the same server in Aachen from which you can obtain GAP and a
number of share libraries we have established a directory in which you
can deposit programs that you offer for everybody's use.

You can do this by

'ftp samson.math.rwth-aachen.de'

login as 'ftp'

the directory is

'/pub/incoming'

into which you can deposit your file(s) with

'put'.

We suggest that your file should have a suggestive name, that it
should start with a comment with your name, postal and e-mail address
and a description of what the program(s) are supposed to do and then
of course the code. If you are sending several files belonging
together we suggest that you should also provide a file giving an
overview.

We emphasize that we will not do any editing, checking or anything
else to these files, which remain completely under the responsibility
of the sender. So in particular we do not assume any responsibility
for them and any questions or comments should go to the authors (or
into the GAP-forum).

All we will try to do from time to time is to create an index of these
files which we will likewise deposit in this directory and also
publish in the GAP-forum.

Obviously we do not have any experience how well this will work, and
in the light of experience we may have to modify the setup later, but
I hope that it will grow into a useful service for the communication
of colleagues working with GAP and I invite and ask you to use it.

With kind regards Joachim Neubueser
